The GAT Stand 

a GAT-compatible Addon Holder 
with RTC and ambient light detection 

Originally released at Hackaday Supercon 8 

This is a basic display you can use to show off addons. Put them on a shelf, on your desk... anywhere where you have either basic 5V power or a USB PD power supply.

Addon power can be turned on and off manually with the buttons at the rear, or automatically based on ambient light level. Coming soon, you will be able to program a schedule for powering on and off.

Specifications:

• Fused and protected GAT and v1.69bis-compatible addon port*
• Max addon current supported 200mA, with peaks of up to 300mA (no greater than 10uF input capacitor)
• Downstream USB Type C current maximum 1.5A combined

Features:

• Type-C powered (5V PD compatible)
• Daisy-chainable, with input and output Type-C ports
• Soft-switchable power for addon
• Soft-switchable power for downstream USB 5V powered devices
• Can soft-switch daisy-chained addons or any basic 5V power only downstream device at up to 5V 1A
• Backup battery retains the clock and current powering settings

• Computer console for controlling the addon holder
• Configurable RTC for setting lights on/off schedules
• Configurable thresholds for automatic lights
• Send and receive arbitrary I2C data to addons. Useful for addon development

* Protection is basic - power will not feed back when off, current is limited by LDO regulation and polyfuse. Next version will add overvoltage protection, current monitoring and automatic high-current shutoff. Most addons are very basic so these additional protections are only useful for addon developers doing very weird things with addons. For reference, almost all badges with addon ports have no protection whatosever.
